life's little pleasures

There are few things more satisfying than coming home after a long day at work and being greeted by the smell of a homemade meal.

There is a pot roast in the slow-cooker. It began stewing at 6:30 this morning, and won't stop until 4:30 this afternoon. That's 10 hours of slow-roasting goodness, and I can tell it's going to be perfect.

One of my goals this winter was to master a number of comfort foods that I loved growing up. It started with a resolute desire to make chicken-and-rice soup, which my grandmother and great-grandmother on my dad's side used to make whenever we'd visit their home in Fall River, MA. They're Portuguese, but while there's nothing distinctly Portuguese about chicken-and-rice soup, I've always associated it with my great-grandmother, and maybe that's why I love it so much. I have very few memories of her, and when you don't have a lot of memories of someone you love, you tend to cling to the ones you do have. I'm not sure if I made the soup exactly the way she did (the next time I see my grandmother, I'll have to ask her for the recipe), but the end result was delicious.

Then I attempted to make one of the best things I remember my mother making when I was a kid - pot roast. That, too, was delicious, and miraculously tasted just like hers did! Both of these successes gave me a little more confidence in my cooking skills, which generally leave room for desire and eventually have Jeremy taking over for me. Now I feel certain that, at least with Jeremy's help, my dream to make the perfect homemade macaroni and cheese, chili, popovers and chowder is not an altogether hopeless one.

Anyway, enough about food. My stomach is growling ferociously and I still have to shower and clean house a little before said boyfriend-turned-mysteriously-awesome-chef gets home. I just wanted to brag about what I was eating for dinner, and hopefully you're all eating something yummy too.

I leave you with these, the first of many collages to come. I am almost done with one now, and should have it posted within the next few days.

me

My name is Audrey. I'm just a twentysomething learning how to master the arts of cooking, cleaning, working and being in a relationship, same as you.In between all that, I like to collect sea glass and salvaged furniture. Occasionally, I cut and paste scraps of paper together. In the end, I am hoping that all of these things together will somehow amount to something good. This blog is a journal of my efforts to get there.
